Scam Alert: Unknown Persons Claiming to be a Zain & Co. Lawyer

Zain & Co., member firm of Dentons (the “Firm”), has been informed of attempts by unknown individuals (“Perpetrators”) to scam the public by impersonating a partner of the Firm.

Specifically, the Perpetrators have presented themselves as “丹律师” (Lawyer Dan / Dennis), in an attempt to impersonate Dennis Khong, who is a partner of the Firm. They have also copied the Firm’s address and photo of Mr. Khong from the Firm’s website and used the photo and address in their profile to mislead members of the public. It appears that the Perpetrators have been primarily targeting persons who communicate in Chinese.

The Perpetrators appear to have solicited clients via WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram and potentially other social media platforms. They have claimed that Mr. Khong and/or Zain & Co. are looking to assist victims of online scams, and have requested personal and confidential information from the persons contacted.

Furthermore, in some cases the Perpetrators have sent fake “letters of appointment” via WhatsApp. These fake “letters of appointment” may bear a falsified “Dentons” logo or stamp.

The Firm wishes to emphasise that we do not use WhatsApp, Telegram or any similar platforms to solicit new clients. All initial communications from our Firm are sent only from our official email domain, namely, zain.com.my. All letters of appointment by the Firm are also in the English language and sent only from our official email domain.

We have been informed that the Perpetrators have also invited potential victims to meet in person at locations near to, but not at, our offices. Please be advised that our address details can be verified with the Bar Council of Malaysia or from this website.

Please do not respond to any unsolicited messages from any WhatsApp, Telegram or other social media platform profiles claiming to be representatives of our Firm and offering you legal services. Do not share any personal, financial or confidential information with them or open any links contained within their messages.

We have also been informed that a fraudulent website has been created, in the Chinese language. Please be advised that the Firm’s official website is www.zain.com.my. The Firm does not have a Chinese website, and the official Dentons website is www.dentons.com
